The Moro reflex tests the integrity of the brain stem vestibular system, controlling the sense of motion and balance. Extension of the head results in the extension and flexion of the arms and legs. The tonic neck reflex, grasping reflex, and parachute reflex also originate in the brain stem vestibular nuclei.

The rooting reflex whose afferent component are the sensory fibers of the trigeminal nerve and the efferent part are the muscles that control neck turning, originates in the brain stem trigeminal system.

Placing reflex has a higher order of origination which is the cerebral cortex. This primitive reflex will prepare the infant in the event of learning how to walk.

The spinal cord has the afferent and efferent loops of the trunk incurvation reflex.
