i have asked many questions pretaining to this

categorical or preliminary surgery

which one is easier to get into with 190/77 on step 1, IMG, graduated last month, A's in general surgery, Internal Med, Family Med rotations, have written a thesis on CABG and angioplasty??

is doing a preliminary surgical program going to get me into a categorical program?

go look up the number of unfilled premil programs for surgery in the year 2007.
you will notice that a substantial number of positions went unfilled last year.
consult a few residents and decide accordingly.
or post this on the matching/residency forum.
