Hey Jenny...here is what I had written for another person who asked about OB-GYN. I think that for IM, you also have a very good chance. However, when you say good university setting, how "good" are we talking. The reason why I say is that IF you want to do IM at the nation's top 25-40 programs, you may have some difficulty (heck...even US grads need close to if not above 90 on the steps to do the IM program at these universities). On the other hand, if you want to do IM at a good university like THomas Jefferson or UMDNJ or SUNY-Brooklyn (since I am only familiar with Philadelphia and NYC, I can only talk about these places), then you have a better chance. Hope this helps, and here is what I had written:

...I am not sure how familiar you are with the American system of healthcare, but Ob/Gyn is the field with the HIGHEST legal malpractice rate, and the highest one for malpractice insurance. To illustrate, the city of York, Pennsylvania literally (at one point as recent as 2 years ago) had 2 OB-GYN IN THE ENTIRE CITY!!! The reason for that was because they were getting sued so frequently that people left. The average malpractice insurance for Ob/Gyn in York is somewhere in the low $120,000 PER YEAR!
This statistic is very similar to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, which also has malpractice somewhere in the low $100,000.

I am not saying this to discourage you but only to reassure you that with yoru scores, you will DEFINITELY get a spot. the way I look at it is this: if you are good, you WILL NOT get sued! Obviously you are good, as your scores suggest. The reason why Ob-Gyn spots are not filling is because those that are average or below average are no longer going into Ob-Gyn. Since there are lots of Ob-Gyn spots, they get filled by the really good candidates, who truly want to go into Ob-Gyn. However. this still leaves many spots open...

Hi Jenny,
I recommend IM and you can may be do electives in Gyne.
Go to FREIDA and search programs in NY, NJ, PA, IL, MI,and OH (the easiest states to match), don'twaste your money on CA and FL is also difficult.
You will for sure match into a good university program and as medlaw06 said not necessary the best in the nation.
Let me know if i can be of any help.

a great piece of advice medlaw and you truly deserve an accolade for such elaborate analysis. I would be candid here and tell you that I am in a great fix as which field to go to. Right now I am simply following the greater trends, usually done by rest of the so many IMGs, that is IM Preferably. I have started to work and know more about other fields too but still am sceptical about their future prospects and their scope. I am personally also interested in Pediatrics. But again am not too sure about good or near good programs and whether it is competitive enough. IM seems to have greater scope but again while applying for residencies I am totally unfamiliar of which programs to carefully select to despatch my application to, as it is both expensive and needs to be thoughtful. So far I have had little success in making a final decision about which programs to apply to , perhaps well informed friends on this forum, like you would like to help.
I would also like to know some back up programs where I can definitely go into for IM and perhaps pediatrics. Gyne seems to make me a little afraid now after all stats presented by you MEDLAW, You were dead honest for sure and great of you to be so. Plz tell me about my further queries. This forum is really a blessing for ignoramous like me :-)

Thanx Om for you advice, It sure is a piece of true guidance by you. Om would you plz tell me how to weigh IM and ped. and whether the states you mentioned can get me in to a good residency program. Do you still think that I need to engage in some research too. These are really hectic queries but I appreciate your patience.

Hey Jenny...

ignoramous!?! Aren't we ALL ignoramous since we are all at this site!? :-)

In any case, here is my e-mail address:

pennova98

Ask me about whatever question you have and I will respond to the best that I can/know.

My mother (who is also an IMG) did her residency in peds and fellowship in neonataology. She did them both at university settings.

She is at a teaching institution now. The reason why I am telling you this is b/c you stated that you are interested in peds, and i have some (hopefully helpful) peds advice, since it would be an honor to follow in my mom's footsteps! :-)

E-mail me if you want with any questions!
