A study is done to determine the efficacy of fish oil in preventing progression of renal disease in patients with IgA nephropathy. One hundred consecutive patients with newly diagnosed IgA nephropathy are entered into the study. The odd numbered patients are treated with fish oil and the even numbered patients are treated with olive oil, an inactive fatty acid. Over the next 5 years, all patients are followed for the development of end-stage renal disease. Results are shown:
