my silly question - orthop
#1
I am a 2000 graduate followed by MS in ortho from India, working well & with no plans to change my field of work. feels pretty confident in my skills.
started prep for mle after my boss offered a fellowship in US in ortho thru his friend but they req a mle score. After fellowship I will join my boss back in India with super specialisation
cleared step 1 now 251/99.
a part of my mind wants me to settle in US.
do I need to do a residency to settle?
is ortho residency available to img?
anyone in the same boat regarding fellowships?
lot more silly ques to come

So why would you want to abscond from india after your fellowship. You now see how ungrateful you indians can be. Must you all come to the US? Are there not enough indians here already? I'll call your Boss right away. You can forget about the fellowship.

thanx for giving me a nice thrashing but its only a part of my brain which wants it rest wants to go back to india.
so I want to satisfy that part so that later it doesnt say why did'nt u searched for other options.
definately residency in ortho will be a very good thing becos I know the way of working in US is far different & mature then what we do in India.
the ques of settling is far down the lane.
still my first aim is to get a fellowship.
but also I want my ques to be answered.

i think u can get residency in US. and a fellowship will strengthen ur app for residency. its weird, fellowship first, residency later, same is the case with ophtha.
which hospital in india, may i ask?
yes, i think u have to do residency in US to settle in US, not sure though.

As far as I know ,fellowship is only availabe for anesthesiology and radiology. They dont have direct hands on patients. So for your specialty u should get into residency through ERAS which almost immposible for IMGs, specially with a cut off more than 10 yaers from med school (not residency). So I would say think about it u may become doctor in US again, but not nesecerely an Ortho. Even in that case I recommend to claer all exams first including CS and step3 then plan to move. GL

If your intention is to return home, you can do a fellowship without residency.

If you intend to practice in the US you MUST have a US residency.

NOTE: if you do the fellowship first and then decide to live in the US, IT WILL NOT COUNT.
You would have to repeat your fellowship after completed US residency.

The reason being, in order to become licensed in the US you must have completed a US residency.

I am almost sure with a fellowship in US you can start working in US, with your j1 visa. But you will have to find out some hospital to process your greencard to move from J1. Everything is possible thru contacts.
