PVD is caused a gradual occlusion of arteries by atherosclerotic disease that manifests as intermittent claudication that progresses to rest pain over the period of months to years.

Embolic occlusion is sudden and leads to sudden onset pain, color change.

Question stem will give some idea about the pathophysiology of manifestation. Long standing smoker, or hypertensive or diabetic for PVD while embolic disease patient wil have history of arrythmia in most situations.
