???Important regarding J2 residency??? - vs2010

If I am on a J1 research VISA and want to do my residency on a J2/EAD instead of J1 clinical.
Ofcourse my spouse is on J1 residency.
I want to do this because this way only one of us will have to do the waiver.
Can someone plz guide me through this?
