Hi everyone,
I really need help from all you great people out there. I couldn't match this year, this was my second time trying. My step 1 score was 80 2nd attempt, step 2 86 (1st attempt), not only that i am an old graduate (2000) which is a big setback. I have not done any research, but i have been working in US hospital at the emergency department as a ER Tech for last 15 months. I had no interview in the first try, 2nd try i had 2 interviews, and i was ranked in one program but unfortunately couldn't match. Please tell what should I do to strengthen my application for next year? I really don't know i thought working in a US hospital would help but it didn't. I have greencard and don't need visa. please help if you have any honest suggestions?

hi, my suggestion would be to complete step 3 and try to get a good score on it , if you havent taken it yet... that would be most do able and most valuable addition on your cv. as you already said.. research-observership- externship the 3 mantras for residency. but they have to come with strong lors... I personally think strong LORs from docs here can do wonders... the best would be to target a university and do a observeship there and impress them so they can absorb you...
i wish you all the luck and strength to fullfill your dreams...

You are at a very good spot to interact with various doctors at the hospital you work at. You MUST work your way thru these doctors and get into a paid research. And if you get into a research that actually gets published?? My god !! I don't wanna speculate but you will most likely get a pre-match next year. All the main study (research) doctor has to do is include your name in the publication and that's it.

Nope, it does not have to be a teaching hospital or should have any association with a research program .... paid research is an extremely lucrative business... EASY MONEY.... and doctors (specialists) do it in their pvt clinics. There is a full industry of brokers ... these brokers help doctors acquire research projects for a paid fee. Many doctors have opened pvt companies, which in fact are just names on the paper. All the research work is actually done at the dr's pvt clinic. You need to get in touch with private research companies (which are actually owned by the doctors) and get a research job (even part time will do it).
