Yesterday you were asking about the booster dose of DTaP given to your relative in Canada. I was just reading about Pertussis and came to know about this info. Initially the DTP vaccine used to be given at 2 months, 12-14 months and then one dose before going to school. However, due to a number of cases in the teenagers between 2000 and 2003, it is now recommended to give a dose as a booster in teenagers. This vaccine is known as "Boostex". It contains Diphteria, acellular pertussis vaccine and Tetanus toxoid. Thats why your relative was given the dose. It wasn't a mistake.

Let me mention the risk of encephalitis with cellular Pertussis vaccine is one out of one million.

This is also interesting to note that the Acellular Pertussis vaccine is the only vaccine that is genetically modified by adding two extra amino acids. This retains the antigenicity but loses the ADP ribosylating property of the toxin. Thus it is rendered harmless.
Sorry for lake of info on earlier posts. Hope you see it
