er croup - sami2004
#1
You treat a child who has croup with epinephrine and
dexamethasone. Two hours later his oxygen saturation
on room air improves to 92%.
Your next step is to:
A) Admit the patient to the hospital for further
treatment.
B) Discharge the patient for follow-up in your office
the next day.
C) Discharge the patient with instructions to use a
cool mist humidifier.
D) Discharge the patient with a course of
azithromycin just in case it is bacterial.
E) None of the above

it is A

The correct answer is A. An oxygen saturation of 92%
is distinctly abnormal in a child of this age. He or she
should be running 95% or better. Sending this child
home would not be a great idea.
