Hello,
I am PGY1 FM resident applying for IM program this year.
Can anyone discuss pros vs cons of this idea.
How safe it is to do that?
Thanks

You will be screwed if your PD finds out. There are also funding issues plus any program that you apply to will want to get a LOR from your current PD. The government funds 3 years of your residency and you have used up one already....this is a complex issue and although it is possible to change for some if the other program takes on the cost of your final year. But, in this economy and with so many 1000's of well qualified applicants they are getting these days, no program wants to deal with all of those issues.
If you want to change, you need to talk to your PD first. Some programs may just call your PD also if they know the PD/program if you did not upload an LOR from your current PD. But careful in talking to your PD because if the PD is pissed then you will end up being miserable in your current program for the remaining years!

I do not think it is safe. You have to mention that you are currently doing residency in CAF. Most programs will then like to have a LOR from your current PD. Or they may contact the PD themselves and you do not want him/her knowing through someone else. I would advise you to assess how your PD might take it and then proceed. Remember, if you leave, you increase the workload on the others in the program and the PD may not be happy.
There are people who have done it. But ultimately, it comes down to your relationship with PD and how accommodating he is. But surely you have to disclose.
Think it over and if possible speak to someone who has done it previously.
