Thank you
i am an img. I am applying this year for medicine residency. I am looking for a prelim position so i can switch to neurology.
My experience : I studied about a month for the exam.
I feel this exam is more a nuisance than anything else. The MCQs are not very straightforward. I did all question banks usmleworld, kaplan and usmleconsult. I did only qbook in kaplan. Some questions that were asked on this exam, I didn't even know where to look up the answers to and some were confusing like which test is most appropriate when all the tests in choices appear appropriate. Many questions on ethics which are common sense items. If you have common sense, you got this exam.
There are lot of questions that active people post. I was amazed to see many of those on my exam. go back in forum pages and do all these questions.
About the question banks, I looked through the question banks in Usmleworld, Kaplan qbook and usmleconsult. Usmleworld is too overhyped and not at all reflective of the exam, but its better than nothing. kap qbook and usmle consult is more on target.
Material sources, I did archer lectures and first aid step 3 which i believe will help me in residency. They may have helped me to get this high score. It is hard to say any one source helped because the questions are so vague.
The CCS were a lot easier especially when you know most of these presentations. I My CCS cases were HIV with PCP, hodgkins lymphoma, colon cancer, acute diverticulitis, DKA, heartblock, Irritable bowel syndrome and hepatic encephalopathy. My ccs is very high toward right end. I knew most of these and may be that helped. I used dr.red workshop which gave some useful strategies and tips, his case demos were very organized. This is one thing i must admit is a huge help. I also did first aid cases and practiced with software. The CCS section in back of first aid has most of the cases that I got on the exam.
This exam is a real pain in the neck. So glad that this is over.
Best of luck .
