STICKY: Visa Myth - unimd
#1
Visa is never a factor if a program sponsors visas. People on the forum always seems to think of it as THE deciding factor. It is NOT. Programs want the best people who will fit into their program and NOT a citizen/GC IMG!!

First of all a program will NOT waste their time calling you for an interview and waste their interview slot since they are limited, if they already know that they will not sponsor visas. Programs that do not want to sponsor visas will mention on their website that they do not sponsor visas.

A program will NOT take a 80/80 2nd attempt applicant who is US citizen over a 99/99 1st attempt visa needing IMG. They want the best candidate.

Just because an applicant has low scores does NOT mean that their application is bad. There are MANY MANY MANY other things that program look for in an application like USCE, US LORs and who wrote them (not your uncle or aunt!), where you got your USCE, social skills in interview, etc

This forum spreads a lot of things that are untrue and freaks people out for no reason.

If you have low scores and you think that getting a GC will get you residency, you could not be more mistaken. Working on your cv will get you interviews with low scores not just a GC.

I know people who thought that getting a GC will erase their poor creds and married citizens for GC but did NOT get residency even after 2 match years!!

Why do you think this forum always has those ridiculous petitions to stop J1/H1 etc by citizen/GC holders? It is because visa is NOT the factor that decides whether you get residency or not. There are so many other factors that a program considers. Visa is a non-issue for hospitals that sponsor visas.

Others that do not sponsor will mention it anyway but even those programs will not take a GC just because he/she has GC or is a citizen. All programs want the best people to take care of their patients.

residency programs has been granted the authority to be a petitioning figure for their chosen residents should they want eheheheheehe. they are separate entity (residency programs and immigrations) but its all under the federal government lol
the government provides money to residency programs to decide whatever they want and employ trainee with it since health care is needed, they also give residency programs the residency programs the authority to be a petitioning figure if they have reviewed application from an img and find it in favor (since the fsmb allows that imgs can also apply for residency), the federal government also makes necessary changes with the immigration to allow for intake of imgs by making provisions of j1 and h1b visa, a special visa at the disposal of residency programs although they don't have green card nor be a citizen. in a way they work coherently not against each other lol.

so residency can be like a family filing on your behalf lol the federal government has also made sure that the filing for j1 and h1b can be done within ~3 months period or less so that the h1b or j1 visa is available after match in march and before the beginning of training in july. i.e. as soon as match is done, the petition letters and such is made and discussed by the program and the individual which is then forwarded to the immigration. this is where the problems usually happens filing taking longer then 3 months due to incomplete documents and such. but the target of the filing is to fit within the period after match so that trainees are at their individual residency program when it starts in july.

once you complete residency, you can file for green card under profession of medical doctor which can be done by a hospital that employs you.

so to stop imgs from applying - go after fsmb to close the door to imgs lol but, counterpoint would be - it would be more of violation of international treaty lol but that would mean every other field not just medicine, h1b is not only utilized for medicine lol there will be a halt in things with repercussions that is yet to be measurable lol lol the only thing that can be done is reroute things but not totally shut it down lol lol which is for years to come, good thing we have our ecfmg certification already lol
