The deletion causes a frameshift, and results in translation of an almost entirely different protein that lacks enzymatic activity.

and that lacking enzyme is "Glycosyltransferase".An enzyme that is expressed by "Allele A" and "Allele B" in order to form Type A and Type B antigens respectively.
