@riotgrrrl-- Don't you think that's kinda rude to the SP?
Can we instead say that "I want to give my full attention to your problem at this time. So lets talk about your problem. Ok?"

@riot......its rude.
@raj.......its rude as well plus wrong word selection.

whatever sp ask always explain and find the concern.
explanation is based on situation.

give me detail about situation.e.g what is c/c and how much pt is drinking and under what circumstances pt is asking this qs

In Both cases just explain that
1." mr. xyz studies have shown that drinking too much is really bad for your health esp if somebody is having ulcer in the stomach. For proper treatment and full recovery i need you to stop drinking".we have a social worker in our hospital who will help you in this.

2.mr.............................................................................................................health and i can understand you are going through hardships in your life but you should not put your health at risk. i recommend you to please stop drinking. we..................................................this.

@Joshent- Thanks for the answers but I think you didn't answer "Dont you drink doctor?" in 1st case scenario. Imagine that when you told the patient that studies have shown that drinking has bad effect on liver, brain and many other organs..and patient suddenly pops up - "Don't you drink doctor"???
What would be most appropriate response in that situation??

@shelpsm- That sounds nice. Smile

Thanks,
Raj
