Each program will be different. This is purely from my experience, and in no one reflects all interview experiences. If you are a strong candidate, then the program will be trying to sell the program to you. Have lots of questions and read everything you can on line about the program ( a good way to generate questions) Be truthful with your answers. Be sincere and humble, but confident. Think of generic answers well ahead of time. (why do you want to do xx? Why here? what do you want to do after residency? Do you want to do a fellowship?) Have answers for any possible red flags. (What did you do between graduation and now; why did you fail CS?) Remember if you meet other residents and staff; they will report any negative comments to the PD.

Most university programs will serve you a light breakfast (I find it too cumbersome to eat and talk to other applicants or residents. I would recommend eating before getting there. Always go to the bathroom to check your appearance before reporting to the specified location.) Most of the time the PD will speak to the applicants as a group. Then the interviews will begin. Usually, you will get 3-4 interviews. Each interview is usually 30 minutes long. Sometimes, there will be a break during your few interviews and you will go on a tour of the facilities.

Usually there will be lunch where you will meet other applicants, attendings, and residents. Remember be on your best behavior at all times. Most interviews end around 4 or 5pm. Some longer and some shorter.

In most cases, it is okay to leave your carry-on with the PC as you may be running to catch a flight after the interview.

I am having insomnia so sorry for the long post.

thanks belleandsebastian. may i ask, are the residents and other staff member asked to spy on the applicants or do they do the feed back thing as a courtsey to the program?

No, neither. Residents are simply looking after themselves. Since residents spend the majority of their lives with other residents within the same program, no one wants to be stuck with an arrogant or lazy resident. At the end of the day, personality and the ability to communicate trump board scores and publications when it comes to ranking.
