Sit down or stand while taking history - imed13

hi guys, please give me your input because i read somewhere that we need to sit for cases and stand for er cases? what should i do? im scared if i sit down i won't give my patient the attention he/she needs so really stuck exam coming up thanks

Depends on your height...if you are tall, you should sit and if you are short then stand...this will help you in making proper eye contact with the SP.

definitely do NOT sit for an ER case or if patient upset for any reason.
for the rest do whatever makes you most comfortable.

i support usmleaspirant10's point of maintaining eye contact.


Additionaly, if patient is lying down in bed on his/her back than you should take history while standing on right side of the patient. and if he/she is lying on his/her side, then it will be difficult to maintain the eye contact while standing, So in this case, take history while sitting.
