it's a bit confusing, but I will explain it in terms of my home state, NY.

If I want to apply for step 3 now, I could do it, even though I have not passed ck yet (I have passed step 1 and cs)

HOWEVER, if I want to get licensed in NY, I would still have to do 3 years of residency, EVEN if I passed all the exams (and I have multiple attempts on the exams, so I am not even sure if I could get into residency in the first place, and if I can't get into residency, then I can't get licensed in NY). Check this site out: http://www.fsmb.org/usmle_eliinitial.html#b8

This is further complicated by the fact that now, starting this year, if you have not taken a step before, you basically have only six chances (three times a year essentially) to pass each step. If you fail more than six times, your application for the seventh attempt will not be accepted, and therefore you cannot complete the step series, you cannot apply for residency, and you cannot get a license. http://usmle.org/announcements/?ContentId=77 and http://usmle.org/announcements/?ContentId=76

I wish I had gone into information technology, or computer science, back in my undergraduate period of 1997 to 2001...

usmletaker,

so Step 2 has two parts...so someone can't apply for CS/CK if say you already have three failed attempts on CK and three failed attempts on CS and yet to pass either one under such circumstances? I didn't read the link to website...

usmletaker, without passing ck, u can't apply for step 3. not only in ny, all states.
regarding license different states has different rule. check fsmb . like california , no rule for step 1 and 2 but step 3 has to be passed within 3 attempt. there are states where no cut off. yes now there is new rule about number of attempt i guess which i don't know.
@ gopal, if u don't qualify for state license then better not to apply for residency there. definately going to be difficult.

for all the usmle exams, one takes it at a specific date. now with this date, 7 years is counted forward in time. if one is not ecfmg certified by 7 years, the step that had gone past the 7 years period needs be repeated.

to be ecfmg certified, one has to pass usmle step 1, step 2ck, step 2cs. passing this three exams means one gets a certificate, ecfmg certified. having this certificate in place means one do not have to repeat any step of usmle step 1, step 2ck and step 2cs

i did not know the 7 years rules. i passed step 1 in 2005 and ck in 2007. and took the cs but failed. i meet with some doctors who want to write USMLE step 2 and 3 book. and i was busy with the book which i though may need a year or two to finish it.

now i am in big trouble.

7 year rule is to practice in states for all exams including step3 after passing ist exam, time is counted.

generally program look that rule for residency also but its not necessory.but one cannot practice for sure in those states that have these rules.

i hope I am clear.
