Can we ask the patient whether they ever had a "jaundice" or "yellowish discoloration of body"? Jaundice word is very commonly used in day to day conversations, but would USMLE consider it to be a layman's term?

i think its always safer to use the easiest terms... so yellow discoloration of eyes or skin is best why take a chance?
