Is this true, that we need SSN for NPI?

Or can we register for individual NPI right now, without J1 Visa/SSN?

you can do it WITHOUT ssn. I applied with my ITIN NUMBER( TAX PAYER ID). you will not be able to do it online.will have to sent paper application with copies of drivers license/passport/birth certificate. call them at their toll free number.they will help.

But I'm Canadian..and never lived in U.S. So I don't have ITIN Number...
