From a french medical school to a US residency - jeremyd
#1
Hi everyone,

I am finishing a third year of medical studies here in France. I still need to do 3 more years to finish the medical school. I am planning to finish the Step 1, Step 2 CK and Step 2 CS during the following years, before the end of the med school.

I am writing here because i have understood that you need a diploma from a foreign medical school in addition to all your USMLE results in order to apply for residency (MATCH).

But apparently there is a problem with France : i am reading online that the french med school diploma are not recognize, contrary to any other European countries.
------> So is it true? or can i just finish medical school here in France, while doing the USMLE (maybe taking a year off in order to have good scores); and then apply for US residency ( and stay in the USA).

Also, but this is less important, i already did a master degree in "Research in Oncology" in my french university, using intercalated degree programs. I did a year at the laboratories of Harvard Medical School last year for that. Will this help me during interviews for residency? But as i said, my prior concern is the previous question.

Thank you for your time. Your help will be very appreciated, because french students are all speculating and imagining things and it's now impossible to know what the truth is.

Have a great Day!
Jeremy

I don't know where have you read that french universities are not recognized, but in order to obtain ECFMG certification, your school should be listed on the FAIMER website: which is the case fore french schools.
taking a year off to prepare for medical school that's up to you, but you should be aware that you have to explain the gap that will appears in your CV during this year, and PD's don't like to have gaps just to prepare for exams.
What i suggest is that you prepare for step 1 during your 6th year when you have no exams in your school instead of preparing to the frensh exam (l'ECN), this way you can prepare properly to the exam, and you will have a diploma after the 6th year(if I am not wrong l'ECN isn't an obligation to have the diploma)
hope it helps et bonne chance Wink

Just look through the information here as it states something based on from a french medical school to a US residency now. We can hope as it was all about https://www.assignmentholic.co.uk/our-se...sertation/ as that can be what there are many who needed to know at this time for them.
