had a PD of a big uni progrm break it down for me in a nice convo

for COMPETITIVE fellowship- Letters of rec/connections/in-house?> performance in res incl if ur chief> research and QUALITY of research > IMG/US grad > Step 3 >2>1 (all count tho)

unfortunately the IMG still haunts us for competitive fellowship

Step 3> Step 2 or Step 1? I wouldn't agree with that.

Your scores matter, but not nearly as much as where you did your training, your research, your connections and letters of rec, visa status

"According to FPDs, the eight most important candidate
selection criteria were the candidate interview, letters
of recommendation from specialists known to the
FPD, the IMPD letter of recommendation, residency
in a university-based program, expressed interest
in research, applicants not requiring an H-1B visa,
performance during an elective at the fellowship site,
and the applicant’s United States Medical Licensing
Examination scores"

basically exactly what I said u so funny kash :-P ;-)

on SDN, a bunch of PD and fellows commented about how Step 3 matters the least. Numerous threads on the issue but basically, I can see how a low or failed step 3 can hurt you, and a really high score may help you but not as much as high scores matter for residency.

I would still rank it as being less important that step 1 and 2 IMO based on anecdotal evidence but i can't post the sdn threads

with that said, as an IMG, you don't have the luxury of blowing off any exam IMO. Don't give them any excuses

I agree with what you said, I was just giving some a link for the OP to corroborate what we have said

I didn't agree with Step 3 > than Step 1 or 2 that is all and in the grand scheme of things, scores mean a lot less so nothing to really worry about.
