Hi, I am a Canadian citizen applying for US medical residency. Could anyone please tell me how the j1 visa differs from the h1b visa ... what criteria is necessary to be eligible for h1b?

For H-1B you need to have passed Step 3 and programs have the means to sponsor the H-1B.

J1 visa differs from H-1B where it doesn't require step 3 and after 3 years of residency you have to return to your home country to work for 2 years (I think) unless you apply for a J1 waiver.
