the NRMP data states the independent applicant pool for surgery above 220 USMLE step 1 is pretty small. Although chances of matching are not good, the number of applications to review is not much. c/w medicine where the applicant pool is hundreds above 220. I can see many applications being breezed over in medicine.

I agree. Starting to freak out..... Here is what I found on the website of one of the big residency programs - Residency application guideline........

"""What to Do If You’re Not Getting Interview Offers
Key Points
• It’s OK to freak out: After that, take a deep breath, talk to your faculty
mentors, and take action
• When to Start Worrying: After the Dean’s letter is released on October 1st.
If you’ve only received a handful of interview offers in the first 2 weeks of
October, you may need to submit additional applications to less competitive
programs.
• Critical Timing: Application deadlines for most programs are October 15 or
November 1st. If you’re starting to worry and want to apply to more
programs, you need to do it before this.
• Remember: Programs offer interviews in several cycles, and applicants
can match to outstanding programs even when they are among the last to
be offered an interview"""
