Introduction to transcription

A transcription is a process - which converts speech (either live or recorded) into a written or electronic text document. The most common type of transcription is from a spoken-language source into text. The format of the text should be able to be printed as a document such as a report. Common examples are the proceedings of depth interview conducted by researchers, proceeding of doctors'diagnose, proceeding of reporters'interview, which should convert audio records into interview notes (academic transcription), diagnose reports (medical transcription), interview document( interview transcription) respectively.

Transcription is quite different from translation. Translation is to convert a text from a source language to a target language (e.g. translating the meaning of an English text into Japanese), or with transliteration which means representing a text from one script in another.

Transcription is one of the fastest growing jobs in the U.S. Transcription work can be a good choice for people who are retired or who want to earn extra income in their spare time.

Nowadays, most transcription is handled on computers. Recordings are usually digital audio or video files, and transcriptions are most electronic documents. Specialized computer software could assist the transcriptionist in efficiently creating a digital transcription from a digital recording.
