Match advice - sakic26
#1
Here are the most important criteria that I gathered from this year's match (I MATCHED!!!)

1) US-medical grad and VISA issues
2) Step scores - Step 1 for interview
-cannot fail Step 2 CS - but failures for other USMLEs were allowed
3) Interview performance

-will you hit the ground running
-are you someone attendings couuld have a conversation with and work with for the next 3+ years

4) US clinical performance, letters, etc.

5) intangibles - research (actual publications)

I think US medical grad is the most important factor since I had horrific board scores (one step 1 failure, less than 200, step 2 CK was greater than 200, step 3 greater than 200) but still got about 70 interviews out of 100 applications.

My advice for those who did not match

1) get actual US clinical experience (elective/rotation >>>> externship >> observership)

2) get actual publications for research

3) Masters are useless unless you get research publicatios out of it

4) improve on interviewing
