Depends on how the conversation is going during interview.

My background 2006 yog, continuous home country GME until 2012.
My gap is 2012-2015

I was asked, what else would you like to tell me, or what question were you hoping I would ask you?

I told the interviewer, my current work involves runnings blood tests, and its good that i am able to help in the diagnosis and management of patients but I havent seen a patient in 3 years... Attending to patients, seing them improve gives me great satisfaction and I missed that. Only a residency training would allow me to do thay again. I'm really I'd get a chance to do my residency training here.

I answer questions that way! Smile

that is one of the most important yet difficult questions to answer for an IMG. The training gap is also the reason many IMG's go unmatched or are ranked much lower than other IMG's who either are fresh graduates or have a much shorter gap.

I think you can only mitigate a 5 year gap but showing lots of observership, volunteering and research in past 18 months and stating a desire and enthusiasm for learning and treating patients.
