An umbilical hernia is a protrusion (outward bulging) of the abdominal lining, or a portion of abdominal organ(s), through the area AROUND the navel (belly-button).

An omphalocele is an abnormality in newborns in which the infant's intestine or other abdominal organs protrude FROM the navel

OMPHALOCELE IS THE PROTRUSION OF THE INTESTINE COVERED WITH ITS PERITONEUM AND IT IS MORE EXTENSIVE AND IT IS MORE EXPOSED AND INFECTION CAN ENTER MORE EASILY SO THAT IT NEED AN URGENT REPAIR. IT IS ALWAYS CONGENITAL. OPERATION IS COMPLICATED AND IT IS URGENT.

UMBILICAL HERNIA IS PROTRUSION OF VISCOUS BUT THERE ARE OTHER LAYERS WITH IT LIKE FASCIA AND ALL SO THERE NO DIRECT EXPOSURE AND FEAR OF INFECTION IS LESS/ AND SOMETIMES IT CAN GO AWAY BY ITSELF AND OPERATION IF NEEDED CAN BE DONE AT EASE.OF COURSE THERE IS CHANCE OF STRANGULATION BUT USUALLY THE NECK IS WIDE SO YOU SHOULD BE WATCHFUL BUT NOT SO MUCH RESTLESS TO OPERATE.

AND OMPHALOCELE IS ALWAYS RELATED TO OTHER CONGENITAL DEFECT --SO LOOK FOR THOSE TOO. BUT UMBILICAL HERNIA AS YOU SAID TO HYPOTHYROIDISM.
