Serious and professional, nothing revealing, no unusual colors or excessive make up. Simple and straightforward. Same as you would dress for an interview.

This was honestly the picture that I used for my applications: http:///our-team/ it was taken professionally, but that was just because our school already took the photo from before. I don't think it has to be done professionally, but I would recommend wearing formal clothes and having a friendly smile.

Professional is fine but what about serious face...I don't think, serious face in a photograph is necessary.
