yes helical ct -- it picks both radiolucent and radioopaque stone and also show obstruction and anatomy, as well as near by organs and help in differential diagnosis also.

but still if pt has good renal function test and no multiple myeloma and no allergy to contrast and already you suspect stone urinary tract pathology and pt is not dehydrated pt is not pregnantt you still do ivp--meaning ivp is still popular --in usmle also--

so each question has its own yardstick and we should go accordingly--
