It's a nice specialty...much better than surgery, IM, OB/Gyn in terms of residency life and life after residency. It's a very very easy residency, no challenge.....critics say that this specialty should not exist (most of the time they do trios nurse's job) ....I don't agree though.....But having all this said.....this is a very lucrative residency and competition is high even among AMG's. For IMG's it may be difficult but not impossible if your credentials are really good. Hope this helps.

Your interest. I have seen atleast 2 of my MSIV who succeeded in getting EM residency position after several rotation in EM (both as MSIV and MSIII) and after working hard and establishing excellent image among attending as SubI (sub-intern). For FMG .......score, previous work in ER/Casualty ward and observership/externship in ER probably will help.

Hi nasty! EM is a cool specialty that allows you to decide your own working hours later on. But its competitive. High scores and heavy-duty clinical ex. in ER, preferably in US, plus an LOR from the ER chairperson is required. But what ER people basically do is "stabilize n' shuttle". Theres a protocol for everything, and most of the time, the patient is taken away by specialists even before a definitive diagnosis is made.

hi dammit and mha,
the ability to decide your own working hours is very attractive for me...i think it will be difficult to get a CE in EM. But as dammit says, EM people dont diagnose the patients, the specialist takes over. this can be good and bad as once we are done with our work day we would not have to worry about some unstable patient... that is attractive to me also...
thanks mha for your prompt reply.
dammit i am still waiting for your reply

Nastyone, Sorry I have little input in this one, but it sounds very good based on mha and dammit's analysis. You should go after it and think of other specialties as backup plans. GL!

Very little amount of IMGs high suicidality during residency, you have to love the rush.

I would not mislead people by saying that EM residency is easy and essense of the ER doc's job is similar the one of triage nurse. I worked in the ER and know how challenging and stressful it can be. High risk of litigation and complexity of the job are the main reasons why ERs in the big cities do not hire FP or IM docs. You must go though the EM residency to be board certified and work in ED.
