Does it matter if we are single or married? - life098

When applying for residency do they take into consideration if the person is married with kids or single? Would it matter if its a single 35 yo female applying for residency compare to 35 yo female with 2 kids?

I dont want to discourage you, no matter what your circumstances are but unfortunately there is discrimination against women in general when u interview for residency with some exceptions in fields like ob/gyn, pediatrics and perhaps FM.

If you are a female, program directors and all those who interview you will subliminally try to ask you if 1- you are married or single 2- whether u have kids 3- how will you manage if u have kids and family?

Since discrimination in the US based on sex is against the law, nobody will ever say it out loud in your face that "you cant do residency as you are a married woman with kids and responsibilities" but unfortunately, in the end when they have to rank you, if u they have a candidate with similar credentials like yours, who is also single, they will rank her higher than you.

Dude discrimination is not only about women having kids, there is discrimination in every aspect in the US. But at the same time, they need doctors. Just use your positive attributes and try to stay competitive with good profile.

Age is bigger factor than gender, and it's due to concerns about trainability.

@jjrodz, is 35 yo too old to train?

@life098: 35 years old is not too old to train at all.

@struggling10, very good point. It make sense as a mother you have to manage giving attention to your young kids and manage a demanding career at the same time. Maybe program directors are probably worried about having to contribute more towards certain residents as others will have to cover their shifts or help out more. I don't blame them if they want to know if you have strong support group behind you to help you out through residency with kids.
