any penetrating wound----------laprotomy---exception single gun shot wound.
with blunt trauma, pt. unstable-------do dpl , although usg is preferable.

any penetrating wound beloww the level of nipple do expolatory larotomy .
blunt trauma,if pt un stable do DPL or U/S if stable do ct scan.

Pt in hypovol shock ,has signs of peritoneal irritation........ go straight to Explo Lap
Pt stable but suspected int abd bleed, do CT scan Pt in hypovolaemic shock , no obvious signs of peritoneal irritation( after excluding pelvic fracture and fracture femur) ,to confirm abd bleed do DPL or USG

Sorry, forgot to write the three points above relate to blunt trauma.
For penetrating trauma, do explo lap as lion and human07 have correctly said

Whenver the patient is unstable and you can't diagnose by ultrasound. All stab wounds to the abdomen with obvious penetration of the peritoneum needs exploratory laparotmy. Look for signs of peritoneal irritation/shock.
