Knowing a program director is certainly of help, what is your visa status,Lakshimi.
For Naser:
What is your visa status as well, if you are a green card holder, then getting into family practice is not a problem, if you are not a green card holder go to areas where only few IMGS OR AMGS go.
Keep on trying, sooner or later you would be able to join the team of "residents"
Keep focused, try to do volunteer work in a hospital, that will help you a lot, e.g.: how to interact with pts, how to write a good CV., how to do your job etc.

PD

My story is: I had the most unbelievable recomendation letters, observership in Canada, and Florida, I applied to #120 programs and got only 3 interviews (by the end of December)(average scores).During my interviews I got to know some people who ask me if I applied to specific programs, took my name, and recomended me with their program directors and got another 3 interviews.
Bottom line: Contacts are a must!
