Howard University program - curiousbuddy
#11
just stop bashing Howard.
it served a purpose from US civil war to the 1960's when most white hospitals wouldn't accept black medical students or doctors.

They would have rather treadted a dog than treat a black patient, so historically, I have no problem with them.
They are serving a historically discriminated and underserved segment of US citizens.
If you can't emphatize with that, then you are probably not in the right profession.

It doesn't benefit me just like welcome back centers don't benefit me, but I have more understanding for Howard and it's goals than I have for "welcome back".

i'm not bashing Howard, I said it was an okay program. There are obviously better university programs out there, but that is why i said, "it depends on where else you interviewed". if you interviewed at university of MD for example, i would not rank howard #1. if you interviewed at a community hospital in DC, i'd rank howard #1. that isjust based on the fact that some programs are strgoner than others.

and i respect howard's history... it actually was originally established to treat african american slaves who earned their freedom in the 1960's since those african americans had no where else to go. so i understand... but we are in 2009 now and our president is african american and an african american will not and SHOULD not be ranked less than anyone else in any other US program, so why should howard prefer only african americans in their program and rank another ethnicity less? everyoine should have equal opportunities.

the reason why i didn't agree with ur original post is becuz i dont look down on any person based on their color or race (my personal) but i know that there are of course other ppl who do, and it is sad.

and regarding the program you talked about, i understand your frustration. i would be upset too. but being hired based on ur ethnicity, is diff than having special "programs" or "services" esp for your ethinicity.

i hope ur not offended, im just saying my opinion and i respect your opinion 100%! i think we both have valid points. ethinicty is always a sensitive topic.

Thanx for your responses guys. What about interms of training and fellowship opportunity. Do the residences have better chances than outsiders.

if ur talking about IM, yes, fellowship opportunities r good. the area isn't very safe to live, but u can live about 20 to 30 min away in a safer and nicer place, i think thats what most residents do. the chief resident is gaurenteed a GI fellowship at howard, which is hard to get.
