I agree with many posters and believe interview plays a huge role. And how accessible you are to the program. I was told by a friend of mine to stand out, not by anything crazy, but by being myself and opening up.

For example, if I saw pictures of pets in the interviewers office, I would comment on their pets, b/c I have dogs and it was something to share that was not related to medicine. They want to know what kind of person you are, if you are can relate to people and not be this awkward person who does not open up.

I was asked by a chairmen what I liked to do in my free time, and I was honest and said I love to read books and named some of my favorites. We ended up comparing books we had read and had similar taste.

I know people get really nervous and stuff, but being yourself is the key. They already like you, since you are IVing, so be confident in that you got your shoe in the door.
