Yes, its called a letter of interest. In my opinion, it can only help you, never hurt your chances. You have to do it the right way though. You could try something along the lines of


Dear Dr. XX,

I wanted to take an opportunity to reaffirm my interest in XX. Having done an internship there, I got to see how medicine was practiced and really enjoyed working with the patient population.

As an update on my end, the Journal of XX recently accepted by manuscript which I authored. I am happy to report that the health outreach student group which I lead has helped screen 250 patients in the community since the summer. I am currently working on a research project exploring the impact of medical students on community health outreach. Attached is my CV for your reference.
