thanks prada for your advice, I'm heading to new york next wk and will start with my search. Does anyone know how long it takes by subway from long island to the hospital? thanks

It depends which part of Long Island you live in!

LongIsland is connected to NY with subway . You may have to use LIRR to connect to the subway. There are LI buses too which connect( I think the metro card cannot be used for LI buses) Overall gets expensive and most importantly time consuming and tiring. Not a good thing for 1st year.

However if driving, then LI is a good option.

like iloveyou said, it depends where in LI you're in - Nassau or Suffolk? Do you have a car?

Assuming you're from Nassau -take one of the Long Island buses to the Queens-Nassau border - I'm not sure, but I think the N25/N22 stops there. Then, there are a few Queens-MTA buses which go to the Mary Immaculate area, stopping around Parsons Blvd, or the Jamaica/Hillside Ave buses (Q43, Q46, etc). Check the NYC MTA website for more details.

In response to what iloveyou said,
I think in every residency program you will have some attrition/turnover rates, especially NYC programs. You can't keep everyone happy. On my interview day, one of their best PGY2-s took us on the tour of MIH. When someone asked him how was intern year, he replied that he'd rather be sodomized by a bull, than have to do it again! He then said, "It's like that everywhere in NYC though. You gain a lot of clinical exposure in the process."

The residents that I met on my second look at MIH, more or less said the same thing. I never got the feeling that they regretted joining the program. We even got to meet two ID fellows. The program does have its own fellowships - ID, Pulm, Geriatrics - and this is usually a good sign for any community based, univ-affiliated program, if you want to specialize.

Another upside of training at busy community IM programs, compared to the big-name university ones, is the clinical confidence you have once residency is over. Some residents at these prestigious programs will complain & whine if they have more than 5 patients to manage on a given call night. That's normal fare, if not child's play, for the average NYC resident.

Having chunks of your time devoted to evidence-based medicine conferences on clinical rarities and minutiae you may hardly see, and joining the rat-race to getting your name published like mad, can compromise your clinical acumen, exposure and the confidence that results from experience. Imagine entering a fellowship, not having that confidence. You can't put a price on it.

Ultimately, it's a choice we'll all make as residents on which track we want to pursue. But to make sweeping generalizations on any program based on hearsay, is inaccurate, and often juvenile.

Got the orientation schedule & other forms in yesterday's mail Smile So now it's official.

Prada, if you want a copy of the contract ASAP, you have to call Adrienne. Otherwise, we'll all get it when orientation starts.

Schedule doesnt look too bad....ACLS/BLS is going to be 2 long daysSmile but all else looks aight! Well hope all is well....I know you live in NY but did you move closer to the hospital?? Take care

For the ID pics - just send her a copy of your passport and driver's license, that should be okay. In the first mail they sent out in April, I got a list of recommended study topics, but nothing beyond that. ACLS isn't a cakewalk, from what I heard..

I live relatively close to the hospital, but it's still a driving commute. Have fun unpacking

So is everyone ready for tomorrow? Smile

We don't need to wear labcoats to our first day of orientation, do we? Ah the dilemma of first impressions!
