Observership / externship in California - usmleprincess
#51
President of AMIQT, Dr. Peter Bernad http://www.neuro-doc.com/, is board certified in neurology and welcomes students to participate in month-long rotations and observerships with him and highly qualified colleagues. If students are interested in multiple specialties, we can accommodate them.

Hello adityavarma,

as an undergraduate student you can apply for clinical rotation/electives in different hospitals across USA. sometime your medical school ( e.g KMC, Manipal) has affiliation with some university hospital where you can do your clinical rotations. Apart from that you can apply at Cleveland Clinic, Mayo Clinic. You can try for UCLA, UCSF. But Stanford does not accept IMGs for clinical rotations. Point to note its not free.

Last but important there is a difference between clinical rotations/electives and observership/externship. The former is for medical student and later for medical graduate.

Last but important these days I am coming to this forum less frequently than I used. There is high chance that any future questions on this matter may remain unanswered for a long period of time.

Hope I addressed your concern.
Good Luck!!!

hello smbkc,

Kaiser is not a university hospital. It is a HMO. ( hope you understand what is HMO). They have so many branches all across California. There is not formal application procedure for observership at Kaiser be it Fremont or somewhere else in California.

You need to have some network/ contact person ( doctor in particular) at Kaiser, who can allow you to observe him/her. If you dont have any contact then you can try e mailing individual doctor by going through their website, if you are lucky you may get a response but chances are slim.

ripu97,

There are many social security administration offices all across California, where you can apply for SSN. To apply for SSN you need to have certain US Visa. let say you can not apply for SSN with business/visitors visa. You need to have J1/F1/H1B/GC ( or dependent visa) to apply for SSN.

GO to the http://www.mbc.ca.gov/Applicants/Physici..._Surgeons/
to apply for PTAL once you have your SSN. Typically it takes 7-8 months to get your PTAL.

There are very few ( only 2 i know) who offers externship program in California. The one I am familiar with is Roger Washington MD. go to www.rogerwashingtonmd.com or email your application/resume @ rwashingtonmd

Personally I did my externship there. It was worth doing and spending money. Apart from that you can apply at all the hospital and university program by mailing to individual doctors, but the chances are really slim. you can try at san joaquin general hospital.

Hello pmm2014

I did my externship at Roger Washington MD. The minimum expectation is 2 days per week. But if you are interested for more you can do 4-5 days per week. After my experience I must say it is worth spending this amount of money. I am 100% positive that you will get LOR. I didnt do bargain so I have no idea about that.

also read armelle - 09/26/15 09:26 response on this thread about his/her experience.

Hello sjahan,
You need to have at-least 3 LOR to apply to different participating program through ERAS. You can apply to Roger Washington MD for externship. Visit the web site www.rogerwashingtonmd.com for more information or email your application/resume to rwashingtonmd. I am 100% sure you will have the chance for externship if you apply over there. I am not sure about any observership/externship program near to San Ramon.

You need to have PTAL to apply for residency programs in California.

I am doing all these to help nothing else to be suspected.

I just completed my 4 week externship with Dr. Washington, and I highly recommend it for anyone looking for an externship in Family Medicine. He graduated from Stanford University, he has been practicing Family Physician for over 30 years in the Bay Area, and he has a lot of teaching experience.

During the externship, I performed all the activities a Medical Assistant can do, which included taking medical history, collecting the vitals signs, performing EKG and spirometry. Everything I did was allowed by the AMA, because I am not technically "practicing medicine", I am merely assisting.

Dr. Washington made me feel involved in his practice. He tries to get me to see as many patients with him as possible, includes me during patient consultations, and we discuss each case after consultant. I learned how to write prescriptions, request blood tests and refer patients to specialist according to the USA health care system.

Furthermore, he gave me many tutorials during my externships. Tutorial topics vary widely each time, he introduced the structure of USA health care system, gave me tips on how to strengthen my personal statements, and advice on how to improve my interview skills.

Rena, the current Medical Assistant work with Dr. Washington is a really lovely person to work with, and she really helped me settle in the practice. I highly encourage anyone who wants an externship in California to contact him directly and setup an appointment.

If anyone has any concerns, please post them below. I'll come back here from time to time and help answer any questions. I have completed my USMLE Step 1 and 2 already, and is planning to apply for the residency in California this year for Match 2018. I am happy to share my experience. Wish everyone good luck.
